Ultrafiltration is a baromembrane method of water purification. In this process, water is subjected to a certain pressure as it enters the ultrafiltration unit, and it passes through a semipermeable membrane, resulting in the separation of water into two streams. One of these streams, known as the "concentrate" stream, contains all impurities and bacteria whose size exceeds the pore size of the ultrafiltration membrane. The second stream contains purified water.
Ultrafiltration is often used as part of a larger technological scheme for water purification.
Additionally, the ultrafiltration process finds wide application in the dairy industry, particularly in the treatment of milk whey to obtain whey protein concentrate and lactose. A single pass through the UV module can concentrate whey by a factor of 10 to 30 times.
